A package arrives at Hawk Haven for Commander Stargazer, cigars from the boys back home, though he points out that Earth command ought to know by now that SilverHawks don't smoke. He shows Hotwing a report on a cargo ship crossing Limbo with the Eye of Infinity, a crystal that can create a force field as powerful as a black hole, and assures him that only the two of them know about it. Once they leave, the cigars turn out to be Mo-Lec-U-Lar, who radios the news to Mon*Star.
Stargazer keeps Emergency Channel 13 open for Cargo Freighter 2647, but Windhammer and Hardware close in on it in the Zoomer, blast their way aboard and take the Eye, and the freighter sends an urgent call to Hawk Haven. On Brim*Star, Hardware admits he cannot make the Eye work yet. Mon*Star gives him twenty-four hours, threatens to turn him into software, and decides to leave Mo-Lec-U-Lar where he is, safe as long as nobody tries to smoke him.
Stargazer sends Hotwing to get the Eye back, and Hotwing reckons the first stop is Brim*Star, where Mon*Star is already planning a welcome party for him. A reception committee is waiting. At Hawk Haven, Stargazer thanks Earth Headquarters for the cigars and learns that nobody sent any, and Mo-Lec-U-Lar reveals himself. Realising that the Mob knows everything and Hotwing is in trouble, Stargazer calls for the SilverHawks.
On Brim*Star, Hotwing falls back on escapeology, calls out "Open Sesame!" at a lock, and works his way out of the Mob's hands with one trick after another. Back at Hawk Haven, Stargazer thanks him for a fine job, and says it is a pity he cannot make Mon*Star disappear as well.
Mon*star steals a dangerous crystal that can create extremely powerful forcefields but can't figure out how to activate it.
Commander Stargazer: "He won't. You and I are the only people in Limbo who know about it."
Mon*Star: "If you fail Hardware, I will personally turn you into software."
Commander Stargazer: "I don't smoke, but I appreciate the thought."
What does a dangerous thing look like? Kenneth Vose's script asks the question in its first scene, when Commander Stargazer shows Hotwing a report on the Eye of Infinity, a crystal that can raise a force field as powerful as a black hole. "It doesn't look that dangerous" is the first reaction in the room, and the reply, "looks can be deceiving", is advice that applies just as well to the box of cigars on the desk. The box has been there the whole time, cigars from the boys back home, which Stargazer has already set aside, because SilverHawks don't smoke.[1]
The most dangerous things in the episode are the ones that look harmless, and the Mob wins its first round by hiding inside a present nobody thinks to question. The cigars are Mo-Lec-U-Lar, who radios Mon*Star as soon as the room is empty, so Stargazer's promise to Hotwing, "You and I are the only people in Limbo who know about it.", is wrong while he is still making it. Mon*Star enjoys the joke more than anyone. He leaves his spy in place, safe "as long as nobody tries to smoke him", and then has to explain the pun to Yes-Man!
The best scene in the episode is a radio call. Stargazer, reporting to Earth Headquarters, signs off by thanking them for the cigars: "I don't smoke, but I appreciate the thought." The voice at the other end asks what cigars, insists that nobody sent any, and gives up. Then the spy thanks Stargazer for having him. It is a neat piece of construction. The setup was hidden inside a throwaway gag about Earth command not knowing its own people, and we laugh at the gag without once suspecting the box.
The villains get the broader comedy. Hardware, told to make the Eye work, admits that he cannot just now, then backpedals and asks for time, and Mon*Star answers with a deadline and a threat, "If you fail Hardware, I will personally turn you into software." Yes-Man agrees with everything, twice. The hijack of Cargo Freighter 2647 has the same brisk energy, with Windhammer throwing green lightning from his tuning fork while Hardware rides beside him in the Zoomer.[2]
The weakness is the Eye itself. The narration sells it as the most destructive force in the universe, but we never see it used. Hardware cannot make it work, and once Hotwing is loose on Brim*Star the crystal is just something to carry home. The likely reason is the slot. Twenty-two minutes have to hold a spy, a hijack, a trap and a magician's escape, and a force field as powerful as a black hole would need a story of its own. Hotwing gets his escape, at least, and the animation stages it as a conjuring act, with a red silk drawn through his fist and a bunch of pink flowers a moment later, while he keeps up a stage magician's patter.[3]
It closes back at Hawk Haven, where Stargazer, chin in hand, thanks his magician for a fine job and adds that it is a pity he cannot make Mon*Star disappear as well. Hotwing's trade is misdirection, which makes him the right man to send against a spy disguised as a box of cigars. A clever little episode!
1 ^ Stargazer's complaint is that the people of Earth command ought to know by now that SilverHawks don't smoke. It also keeps the disguise safe, since nobody on the base will ever open the box.
2 ^ The Zoomer is the Mob car with the toothed open-mouth front, named in dialogue in The Saviour Stone. The freighter was crossing from Sector 22 to Sector 21 when Stargazer promised to keep Emergency Channel 13 open for it.
3 ^ Hotwing came to Limbo in Hotwing Hits Limbo. He carries this mission from start to finish, and no other SilverHawk appears in the published frames.
- Mo-Lec-U-Lar spends the first half of the episode disguised as a box of cigars on Stargazer's desk, and Mon*Star leaves him there on purpose, safe as long as nobody tries to smoke him.
- The Eye of Infinity travels aboard Cargo Freighter 2647, and Stargazer keeps Emergency Channel 13 open while it crosses his area.
- The hijack uses the toothed-front Mob car named the Zoomer in The Saviour Stone, with Windhammer firing green lightning from his tuning fork.
- Mon*Star gives Hardware a day to make the Eye work, on pain of being turned into software.
- Hotwing's escape from Brim*Star is played as a magic act: he calls out "Open Sesame!", and the frames show a red silk drawn through his fist followed by a bunch of pink flowers.
- Apart from Hotwing and Stargazer, no SilverHawk appears in a published frame; Stargazer's radio call to the team at 11:52 is the only time they are addressed.
- Stargazer's office is well furnished for a space station: a desk lamp, a wall map, window blinds and an electric fan, all visible behind Mo-Lec-U-Lar at 9:10.
- The closing science segment is about the colours of stars: the coolest stars are red, not blue, and the Kidd finishes on thirteen points for the day.
