A pilot on a team of fliers
Every other SilverHawk folds wings out from under the arms and goes. Bluegrass does not, so when the team scrambles he goes to the Maraj, and the show has to keep finding him something to do that the others cannot do faster. It could easily have made him the spare part. It does the opposite, because a squadron that can all fly still needs somebody who can carry them, and the ship is the only reason the team has any reach beyond its own wingspan.
He is also a country-singing cowboy in a science-fiction cartoon about cyborg police, which sounds like a joke and is played completely straight for sixty-five episodes. The sonic guitar is a real weapon and the lasso works. Larry Kenney, who was Lion-O on ThunderCats, is the only member of the cast who had to sing in character.
Side Man
Side Man is his weapon bird, and the name is the same joke as the rest of him, told without a wink.
The figures
Super7 gave Bluegrass an ULTIMATES! release in Wave 2, a VAC Metal toy-version in Wave 6, and one of the four slots in the ReAction line, which puts him among the better-served characters on the shelf. Kenner had him in Series 1 in 1987 with Side Man, and again in 1988 in an Ultrasonic Suit.
