A douga is the drawing a cel is made from. In a Japanese studio the word covers the finished clean-up: the line that the inkers and painters trace onto acetate, done in pencil on paper and usually thrown away or sold off in bulk once the shot is shot. It is the last stage where a SilverHawks character is still somebody’s pencil rather than a painted surface.
This one is Steelheart, in coloured pencil. Its owner is plain about why she has the drawing and not the cel: cels from this show are difficult to find, and for this shot she could only find the douga. That is the honest state of the market in one sentence, from somebody who went looking.
